Oh. Apparently I called them Sueballoons.
So everything’s wrapping up here as far as school goes. Only two weeks left! Year two, done. Hard to believe. And then full-time janitorial work begins, but hey–all the more reason to want to rush home and cleanse my mind with art.
And a quick comment about, well, comments. The way I have things set up, your comment needs to be approved before it appears here (unless you’re already one of the “pre-approved, known not to be a li’l rabblerouser” sorts). I will generally approve negative comments if they’re worded respectively, even if I don’t agree with what’s said or it just bummed me out for the rest of the day–hey, it’s the life of an artist to receive equal amounts negative feedback, and you have to let it slide–but if the comment is straight-up cruel or mean-spirited, I’m not slapping it up here to see over and over. Yes, I read them all. Yes, I am, actually, human, with a mom and a dad and feelings and friends and a cat named Theodore. Once again, I know there’s still going to be the “WTF WHERE’D THE COMIC GO I HAVE TO READ IT ALLOVER AGAIN FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU–!” reaction, but honestly? It’s done. It’s staying. Nothing that’s said is going to change that. And you know what? I do it for fun, and I do it for you, and if you don’t like it, I can recommend a whole slew of awesome other comics you can go read. In fact:
AWESOME OTHER COMICS YOU CAN GO READ:
- Lackadaisy by Tracy J. Butler
- Earthsong by Crystal Yates
- The Meek by D. Helmer
- Axe Cop by Ethan Nicolle
- Hark, a Vagrant by K. Beaton
- Unsounded by Ashley Cope
Cheers,
Sarah Anne Davis
(Pleased that Ontario finally flicked the switch from WINTER to SUMMER.)

I like Sue in the first panel. Can’t really say much about flamers- they’re stupid. Humanity consists of at LEAST 25% stupid people. The internet on the other hand, it’s more like 97%.
I like how you revised it to bring about so much more Sue! I demand you somehow include more Sue in your Sue filled pages. Sue should just fill all the tiny gaps between panels and be all “I AM HEEEERE COMIC READERS”. Cause Sue is that awesome.
I see familiar faces off in the distance. Chase is pretty on the ball to catch that they’re wolves- I’d assume just.. dogs.. not wolves first. Huskies. 8D
IT’S THE SUUUUEEE SHOW! STARRING SUE, SUE, AND SUE! SEVENTEEN CONSECUTIVE HOURS OF SUUUUEEE, EVERY DAY, SUE FROM MORNING TO NIGHT LIIIVE. TONIGHT’S GUEST? GUESSSSUUUUEEE!–AND HERE’S YOUR HOST……..
Sueballoons?
…
Epic win. That is all. :D ♥
PS, since it’s your comment, I think you’ve full right to dictate how comments work. ‘Dictate’ being the keyword. XD
Also though the old version had its charming moment too.. I DO like the new Awakened <3 And if you like it best, that's what matters.
Honestly, I totally understand being adverse to change if you liked someone to begin with. Like, take Doctor Who for instance. HATED HATED HATED the 11th Doctor when I first saw him. I was so obsessed with David Tennant and no one could be as awesome. NO ONE. I was so set on never watching the show again. XD But then I gave Eleven a chance, gritted my teeth… and realized he had his charm. And then fell in love with him too.
It’s a gut reaction thing. You see crap because you want to hate it because you want what you had before. I don’t think this is crap, I like it much more than the previous, and it’s really so early to be trashing it. If they still don’t like it half a year from now? Well, you know, I wasted a precious two minutes of your Mondays and I deeply apologize. XD
But I’m glad you’re giving it a chance! ;D You’d think I was a maniac wielding a weapon here or something the way some people react so viciously. I’m just havin’ some fun, y’all. Cheers and love! <3
I second this.
Wan, Asher, and Tristan! I know it’s just a little glance, but I’ve missed them so much.
I’m loving Sues’ personality this time around. I want a friend like her. She tells it like it is, has some pretty awesome quirks, and likes to make sure her friends are okay. Honestly, she feels very real to me. She is someone that everyone could know at anytime of their lives. I happen to be friends with a couple people like her.
Those comics you suggested? I already read the top three, but I’ll have to check out the others.
Thank you kindly! <3
I definitely thought Sue needed some more “air time”. Who she is and what she stands for and her relationship with Chase is very important, and I wanted her to be the sort of person we all kind of wish we could be. ;D Definitely have a soft spot for Sue, and I’m glad others are enjoying her as well!
Okay, the day people find out how to make fictional characters real, I am going to steal Sue from you, AND SHE WILL BE MY BEST FRIEND FOREVER.
Yes, that was worth CAPSLOCK.
There’s just something about a character that goes “That totally should have killed us! AWESOME!”
Seriously, I forgot how much I loved her. I think you’re making me love her more now. She is rapidly becoming one of my favorite characters ever.
Glad to hear it! :D
Yes we really need to get on that Conversion to Real Life device! Or perhaps each character we create is in fact appearing in an alternate universe, in which case we really need to go and find ourselves some traversable wormholes. *nodnod*
Ooh…I haven’t read the original, so this is a whole new experience. So far, I really like it. Only complaint is that the archive isn’t yet long enough for a proper binge! :)
I’ll be back next Monday.
It’s cool to hear feedback from someone who’s just starting! ^^ Thank you!
And haha, sooon soooon. With luck, by the end of the summer we’ll have a nice healthy archive. ;D
I haven’t been paying attention to the comments.
Have people really been giving you a tough time in the comment threads?
Meh. Fuck ‘em.
I’ve let a few of the more negative comments slip by, because they were worded a little more nicely. But yeah there’ve been a fair few I haven’t bothered to approve because they were just trolling or flaming. As inconceivable as it is for someone to spend their time writing out hurtful comments to a random artist producing a free comic amidst infinite other Internet distractions, I guess it does come with the territory. Internet Anonymity, you’ve gotta love it! XD
That last panel is hilarious!
I love this revised version so much. We may only be 17 pages in but I keep going back to re-read it from the start over and over and over coz I’m loving it so much :p
So glad you’re enjoying it that much! <3
I love everything about this comic, particularly how quickly it’s updating! Your art is so amazing and the story gets more and more exciting every time. I did love the old stuff as well – I’ve been a fan right from your first page! – but artists develop, that goes with the territory. You have to follow the path that best benefits your art, and we should respect that. :)
PS. Sueballoons! I wanna nestle my wee tiny face between them!
Your postscript sums up my thoughts as well.
And I’m truly thankful for that respect! It’s attitudes like yours that push me to keep going and improve and tell a better story.
Not that I plan to ever restart again, haha. No worries there. ;D
Your comic, you can tell people whatever you want to :)
It’s the way of the internet to come across an obscenely large amount of asshats, wheter it’s games, webcomics or youtube videos.
I read the first iteration of the awakened, and I loved it, I loved the creepyness and the surreal sh*t chase goes through.
SO when you stopped updating because of school… I had a sad :( When I came back after a while to see if you might’ve updated once I saw five pages of newyness waiting for me :O I was happy.
Now… Sue is awesome, and chase is incredibly messed up XD
And the comic is so far pretty awesome :)
Thanks for sticking with me! It was definitely on my mind all throughout the hiatus, and I’m so happy to be doing it again. ^^
I personally have no issues about getting a whole brand new version of a story I was already really enjoying with art that somehow managed to be even better than the older pages. Yay, run-on sentence. I mean, I’d still love to be able to see the old pages just for the sake of comparing and contrasting. My only concern really is a simple one: Will gnomes still like to watch?
I also second this. Gnome should not disappear. c:
I think something very special would be missing if we lost that gnome. ;D
Hmm… Read this one again just now.
And got to thinking.
…
What kind of wolves are we talking about, here?

Sueballoons! I like it a lot; it seems like it’d be really easy to refit to the 99 Luftballoons song. Like, “Only two big Sueballoons, squishing into fried-up Chase brain!”
I read the first incarnation of The Awakened, and even though the story/art has switched up, it still has all the elements that I loved before. The additional benefit of updates is golden! Comics like this tend to take a lot more work than people realize, but this one remains among the works that caught my interest both for art and story.
I have to say that I’ve ADORED this comic ever since I first came across the previous version of it on DeviantArt. The art is very pretty to look at and it’s very well-drawn, the story is fascinating, and the characters are so lovable!
I can’t wait to see how this will play out. Keep up the good work!
While I love the mythology you created with the first incarnation of the comic I feel you were perfectly justified in starting over; I’m betting that you found a different perspective on technique and story layout, or even life perhaps, and said to yourself “Hey, if I do it this way it’ll make the story even more awesome!”.
Everyone should strive for perfection in their art, whatever form it may take, and be lauded for their efforts.
Couldn’t hold back the desire to comment any longer. I love the new style and more development of the sue/chase friendship.
This new Sue reminds me of me. “That was awesome! Shit you’re in shock! Boob-attack super distraction technique!!!”
*grin* yay gravatar…now people who know me on other comics know it’s the same crazy woman.
